If you are interested in a self-directed yoga practice; one you can design and develop at your own pace and practice at home and in a practice studio, Mysore style is a great option. It is designed so that you are required to tailor to your personal practice to your level of fitness and to develope a more challenging practice as you advance. I have listed the official Mysore Astanga Institute Website of Shri K. Pattabi Jois, the guru of this style of yoga. The site has great information on the style and approach.
I studied with a terrific teacher who is certified by Shri K. Pattabi Jois (see linke below). Melanie Fawer developed a detailed instructional and practice (2 disc) DVD set that reviews each position in detail, and then puts them together in a practice DVD - so that you can add one new positions at your own pace, as Pattabi Jois teaches at the official Mysore Instutute. If you are looking for a practice video, I strongly reccommend it.
There are a number of studios that provide Mysore style classes in NYC and a few in other areas of Brooklyn but none in East Williamsburg. If I can find enough interested people, I would like to organize a class and find a certified Mysore teacher (there are plenty in NYC).
I put a poll on this site to get info if you are interested. Just answer the questions on when/ where you'd like to take the classes. I'd like to organize a minimum of 3 morning classes two on weekday mornings (early) and one on the weekend (Mysore practice only takes place on Sundays according to Jois study approch, Saturday classes are not scheudled).
Hope that I find a group of people to join me.
